  • woo woo

"When butter is passed, use your butter spreader to take a pat of butter and put it on your plate.  Don't make a butter sandwich; the proper way to eat a roll is to tear one piece of it at a time, and butter just that piece."

Well I'll be... I've been buttering my roll wrong my entire life!

    But seriously, who KNEW that?!?

    And

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • I guess I have been too! I knew about the putting the butter on your plate part, but not by buttering one piece at a time. Seems to me you'd probably use more butter that way, which might not necessarily be a bad thing.

    Have a good holiday!

  • I can understand putting the butter on the plate part...so you don't get crumbs on the butter spreader for other people to use...but never knew about tearing off a piece at a time. I will see if I can remember that tomorrow. Happy Turkey Day!

  • well I knew about the whole tearing the roll apart thing but then my parent insisted I learn all the manners...personally, I like the regular way of doing it

  • When accepting a roll or slice of bread, place it on your bread plate. Tear fist-sized dinner rolls into four pieces.  Then, using the butter knife provided and the pat of butter also on your plate, only butter the piece of bread you intend to eat at that time. Do not butter all four pieces.

This was one of those cotillion drills.

All that 1950s brainwashing comes in handy on days like today though. Setting the table, making sure the knife blades are turned in toward the plate, the butter knives are in perpendicular alignment to the top of the bread plate, etc.

Let's not even get started on the whole bread plate/salad plate/dessert plate palcement...

  • Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one!

  • Huh! and here along I thought the rolls at Thanksgiving were for soping up the gravy from your plate.  Don't know if I ever used butter on them.

  • I wonder how I'm supposed to put butter on my ear of corn...
